Kneeling, then Rising
“. . . Our eyes see only what we know,
a world white with color blindness.
So let me, my family, rise up now—
be the solo, not just the chorus.
Call it out, sing it loud, for it’s time
we all heal.”
Excerpt from the book, ENOUGH “Say Their Names . . .”
I Want to Believe
“. . . Now, we’re masked, linked together, aware
of the virus around us, the rain beating down.
For, there’s a rainbow ahead, even here,
and we’re chanting now, calling out in unison:
Breonna Taylor! Michael Brown! Natasha McKenna!
Ahmaud Arbery! Eric Garner! George Floyd! . . .
and the list goes on and on . . .”
Excerpt from the book, ENOUGH “Say Their Names . . .”
What Matters
“. . . Regret for all those
we’d lost, I had to say goodbye to this man,
no knee now to hold him fast. Not a day
gone by since when I haven’t walked back
there and looked up, trying to see what
he sees. And today, once again, I am
swept into the march as it turns the corner.
And we chant in unison for Black Lives Matter.
And we chant for all of us not embraced
by the village, fearing we will need
to burn it down to feel its warmth.”
Excerpt from the book, ENOUGH “Say Their Names . . .”
